Closeboard, featherboard, panel, composite and estate fencing, installed with posts that stay where they're put.
What we install
We install closeboard and featherboard fencing, panel fencing, composite systems, estate and post-and-rail fencing, and gates to match. Posts can be timber, concrete or steel depending on how exposed the boundary is and how long you want the fence to last.
Every installation includes setting the line, digging and concreting posts to a depth that suits the ground and the fence height, fitting rails and boards or panels level, and finishing with capping, gravel boards and post caps where appropriate.
Who needs it and when
Fencing is usually replaced for three reasons: it has blown down or is starting to move, it has rotted at ground level, or the garden needs more privacy, security or containment for children, dogs or livestock than the current boundary gives.
The usual signs to look out for are posts that rock when pushed, boards that have gone soft and grey at the bottom, panels that have dropped in their slots, and gates that no longer close because the hanging post has moved.
Why installation quality decides lifespan
Fence panels are broadly the same wherever you buy them. What makes the difference between a fence that lasts and one that doesn't is post depth, concrete, the gap between timber and soil, and setting the line properly before anything goes in the ground.
A fence is also seen from your neighbour's side. Straight lines, consistent heights over uneven ground and a tidy finish at both ends are part of the job, not an optional extra.

What's included
- Closeboard, featherboard, panel and composite systems
- Timber, concrete and steel post options
- Gates hung, aligned and ironmongery fitted
- Old fencing removed and disposed of
Doing it right from the start
Keeping every post firm and supported
Posts set to the right depth and properly concreted keep their neighbouring panels well supported, so the whole run stays solid, even after the next gale.
Keeping timber clear of the soil
Gravel boards and the right ground clearance stop boards wicking moisture from the earth, so the bottom of the fence stays as sound as the rest of it.
Built to stand up to the weather
A boundary specified for its exposure, with the right posts and materials, stands up well to storms and keeps pets and children safely in the garden. Coastal and hilltop plots across Torbay and Dartmoor's edge benefit most from this.
Specifying for exposure, not just price
The right post depth, concrete and gravel boards from the outset make for an installation that lasts, rather than one that needs redoing in a few years. It pays to specify for the site, not just the cheapest quote on the day.
How your project comes together
- Step 1
Boundary walk and measure
The team walks the line with you, measures the run, checks ground conditions, levels and access, and identifies where gates, steps in level and changes of height are needed.
- Step 2
Specification and fixed price
Fence type, post material, height, gravel boards and gates are agreed, and you get one fixed price for supply, installation and removal of the old fence.
- Step 3
Removal and post setting
Old fencing is taken out and taken away. New post holes are dug to depth and posts concreted plumb, with the line set before anything is fixed to them.
- Step 4
Boards, panels, gates and finish
Rails, boards or panels go on level, gravel boards are fitted, gates are hung and aligned with ironmongery adjusted so they swing and latch properly, and caps or capping rails finish the top.
- Step 5
Handover
We clear the site, walk the finished work with you and explain any aftercare. We want you to enjoy your new space from day one.
What you'll enjoy
Stands up to weather
Post depth, concrete and material choice matched to how exposed your boundary actually is.
Straight from both sides
The line is set first and heights are stepped or raked deliberately over sloping ground.
Privacy and security restored
Closeboard and composite options give solid screening, with heights chosen for the outlook you want to remove.
Old fence gone
Removal and disposal of the existing fencing and posts is included, so you're not left with a pile of rotten timber.
Gates that keep working
Hung square with the right ironmongery, so they still latch a year later.
Fencing types and materials
The right system depends on exposure, privacy, budget and how much maintenance you want.
- Closeboard and featherboard: overlapping vertical boards on arris rails. Strong, private and repairable board by board; a popular choice for exposed boundaries.
- Panel fencing: lap, waney-edge or framed panels between posts. Quick to install and cost-effective for sheltered gardens.
- Composite fencing: recycled timber-and-polymer boards in slotted posts. No repainting, stable colour, good for coastal plots and low-maintenance gardens.
- Concrete posts and gravel boards: keep timber out of the ground and make future panel replacement straightforward.
- Steel posts and estate or post-and-rail fencing: for open rural boundaries, paddocks and where you want containment without blocking a view.
Methods: what makes a fence last
Post depth is set by fence height and ground type: the taller the fence and the softer or wetter the ground, the deeper the post goes. Posts are concreted, with the concrete shaped so water runs away from the timber rather than sitting against it.
Gravel boards keep the panel clear of the soil, which is what protects the boards from rot. On sloping runs, the fence is either stepped in even increments or raked to follow the ground, decided at the start so the whole run reads as deliberate.
Gates need a heavier hanging post, set deeper, because they carry a moving load. Hinges, latches and drop bolts are fitted so the gate closes to a consistent gap and can be adjusted later as timber settles.
Situations and variations
Coastal boundaries in Paignton and Dawlish take wind and salt. Specification there leans toward concrete or steel posts, composite or well-treated timber, and sometimes a degree of permeability so the fence lets wind through rather than acting as a sail.
Terraced and town gardens in Exeter and Newton Abbot are usually about privacy and neatness in restricted access: materials often have to come through the house or along a shared path, which changes the working method more than the specification.
Rural boundaries in the South Hams may combine stock fencing, post-and-rail and a decorative section nearer the house. Where a fence sits on top of a wall, the fixings and the wall head have to be designed together.
Domestic and commercial fencing
Domestic fencing prioritises privacy, appearance and boundary relations. Commercial and agricultural fencing prioritises containment, security and durability, often over longer runs with less concern for the decorative finish.
We install both. The installation standards, depth, plumb, line, drainage away from timber, are the same regardless.

Fencing: common questions
How much does new fencing cost?
It depends on length, height, fence type, post material and whether an old fence needs removing. We measure the run on site and give you one fixed price covering supply, installation and disposal.
How long does a fence take to install?
Most domestic runs are completed within a day or two. Longer boundaries, gates and difficult access take longer, and you'll have a realistic timescale with your quote. We work 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.
Do you remove and dispose of the old fence?
Yes: removal and disposal of the existing fencing and posts is part of the job and included in the price.
How long does a fence last?
It depends far more on installation and exposure than on the panels. Timber out of ground contact, deep concreted posts and the right material for the site are what extend it.
Which fence is best for a windy coastal garden?
Usually concrete or steel posts with closeboard or composite boards, and sometimes a design that lets some wind through. That combination stands up best to the exposure you get in Torbay.
Can you fence a sloping garden?
Yes. The run is either stepped in even increments or raked to follow the slope. We agree which before starting so the finished line looks intentional.
Whose fence is it: mine or my neighbour's?
That's determined by your deeds or title plan, not by which side the posts are on. It's worth checking before replacement work is agreed, and we're happy to wait while you do.
Can you fit gates as well?
Yes: pedestrian and double gates, hung on heavier posts, aligned and with the ironmongery fitted and adjusted.
Do you cover Torquay, Exeter and Totnes?
Yes. We work from our base near Newton Abbot across Teignbridge, Torbay, Exeter and the South Hams.
