Where we work in Newton Abbot

We cover the whole of Newton Abbot and the streets and villages around it, including:

  • Wolborough and the streets behind Courtenay Park
  • Milber and Buckland
  • Highweek and Bradley Barton
  • Decoy and Ogwell
  • Kingskerswell Road and the Kingsteignton edge

If you are near Decoy Country Park, Newton Abbot Racecourse, Bradley Manor and the Bradley Woods or the River Lemon through the town centre, you are well inside our working area.

The gardens we see in Newton Abbot

The town splits fairly neatly into three kinds of garden. Victorian and Edwardian terraces around Wolborough and Courtenay Park, with long narrow plots and side access barely wide enough for a barrow. Post-war and 1970s housing at Milber, Buckland and Highweek, where the plots are wider but the ground was levelled with whatever was to hand. And newer estate housing towards Bradley Barton and the Kingsteignton edge, handed over as a rectangle of turf on compacted subsoil.

Each one leads to a different job. On a terrace the work is largely logistics, getting the spoil out and the stone in without wrecking the neighbour's path. On the older estates it is usually levels and drainage. On a new build it is starting the garden from nothing.

Ground conditions near the Lemon and the Teign

The low ground through the middle of Newton Abbot sits on clay and old river silt, and water does not move through it quickly. Patios laid on a thin bed with no fall hold water against the house and green over within a couple of winters.

That is why the sub-base, the fall and where the water is going to go are settled before any slab is ordered. On the higher ground at Highweek and Ogwell the issue is more often slope, where a terrace and a low retaining wall turn an unusable bank into somewhere you can put a table.

What Newton Abbot asks us for most

Replacing a tired town patio

Sunken or slippery paving behind a terrace, dug out properly and relaid with a fall away from the house.

Block paving, resin-bound and tarmac driveways

Front gardens off the Kingskerswell and Totnes roads converted to hard standing with the drainage dealt with.

Garden rooms for working from home

Insulated rooms in Milber, Buckland and Bradley Barton gardens, usually inside permitted development.

Whole-garden renovations

New-build plots near Decoy and Bradley Barton taken from turf and a token path to a finished garden.

Newton Abbot: common questions

How quickly can Phil come out in Newton Abbot?

We are based at Denbury, so Newton Abbot visits are easy to arrange between 8am and 6pm, Monday to Friday. Call 07307 267014 and Phil will give you a realistic day.

Can you get machinery into a terraced garden here?

Usually, yes. Plenty of Wolborough and Courtenay Park gardens are reached through a side passage, so we size the machine to the access or barrow it and price the extra labour honestly at the quote stage.

Do you work on the newer estates?

Regularly. Estate plots around Bradley Barton and the Kingsteignton edge are some of our most common renovations, and they nearly always need the compacted subsoil opening up before anything is planted.
